It is a combination of ambition, perseverance and an ability to take calculated risks that has helped Anil Agarwal grow from a small business to the global natural resources industry. His entrepreneurial experience started in the year 1976 when he had very limited resources, but he knew what he wanted to do and the direction that he wanted to take.

That first investment grew to encompass industries and geographies over the years. This ultimately evolved into a worldwide company operating in oil and gas, zinc, silver, aluminium, copper, iron ore, steel and power.

Building Without a Great Grandparent.

Agarwal’s ascent was not at the head of a well-known business empire. He began with minimal funds and slowly developed his company into new areas as he continued to advance in his career.

This growth later turned his first venture into Vedanta, a leading global player in the natural resources sector. His knack for expanding the business into diverse industries was a crucial aspect of his entrepreneurial career.

The magnitude of this change is also important in the sense that Agarwal is often credited with the image of a Top Indian Businessman. The journey from a small start to a global enterprise is illustrated in his story.

Looking Beyond the Indian Market

In 2003, the biggest decision of Agarwal’s career was made.

He felt that Indian businesses were not being valued and appreciated internationally enough at that time. Instead of taking that situation he took the other way.

Agarwal went to London and started an overseas listing for his business. He is the first Indian to list his company on the London Stock Exchange in 2003.

The move was a big financial and strategic risk. It was a turning point, however, and helped shape Agarwal as an entrepreneur who would take unconventional measures in reaching for a bigger vision with Vedanta.

This mindset of looking beyond conventional business paths is an important part of what has made him the name to be spoken when it comes to the Top 10 Indian Industrialist.

Businesses must be responsible to give back.

But for Agarwal, business growth has not been the only focus.

His vision of businesses’ role in society has also influenced his approach. This philosophy is reflected in his investments in the metals and mining sector in India, which have been focused on assisting India to become more self-reliant.

He also has insights into the needs of smaller businesses. The MSMEs are provided with tools and services under the Vedanta Saathi programme to build their businesses and generate employment.

Strengthening efforts to care for children and women

The Nand Ghar initiative is another significant initiative of Agarwal’s in which he worked to benefit society.

The programme is a linkage of early childhood education, rural health care, nutrition and women empowerment. In the last five years it has served many families and the vision is to serve more children and women in underserved communities.

They are spearheaded by the Anil Agarwal Foundation, which operates in various fields such as healthcare, nutrition, women and child development, animal welfare, grassroots sports and hunger alleviation.

This book is based on a simple belief: no one should go to bed without food.

A Journey that goes beyond business.

The growth of a global enterprise and a wider social impact are part and parcel of Anil Agarwal’s journey. With few resources at his disposal, he started to expand his business throughout the sectors and geographies since 1976.

However, one of the most significant steps he has taken on this journey has been the listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2003, which marked his willingness to take a significant risk in order to achieve international recognition.

Meanwhile, projects like Vedanta Saathi and Nand Ghar exemplify his other philosophy — how business can be made to deliver opportunities and help communities.

Whether he was a small trader or a global company, Agarwal’s road to success has been defined by similar traits—ambition, taking risks and going the extra mile, and a faith in the power of success to serve a greater good.
